Living Naturally: A Harmonious Blend of Modern and Japanese Architecture

Residential House Design by Hui Ting Wang Wins Silver A' Design Award

Living Naturally, an independent villa designed by Hui Ting Wang, is a unique blend of modern style and Japanese architecture. The design, which houses three generations of a family, not only optimizes space usage but also carries forward the eastern family heritage and emotional continuity. The design has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award for its innovative approach to residential design.

The design inspiration for Living Naturally comes from the concept of a shared living space for three generations. The design combines modern style and Japanese architecture techniques, creating a comfortable and free homestay feeling. The use of natural materials, such as non-decorated surfaces and wood stacks, contributes to this feeling. Large glass windows and the design's penetration characteristics allow the garden and the interior to echo each other, creating beautiful scenes both inside and outside.

The realization of this design involved a significant departure from traditional building facades. Instead of opening windows to the outside, large windows were opened along the interior of the building, maintaining the privacy of the house owner while allowing them to enjoy the beautiful garden scenery from every room. The use of glass as a compartment material extends the light, improves the brightness of the space, and connects people and scenes.

The design incorporates several unique features to enhance interaction. The outdoor garden has deliberately widened grey steps transformed into natural outdoor tables and chairs, creating a small area for inspiration and emotional communication. The three-floor-high maple trees connect with the osmanthus trees planted on the third floor, creating a dialogue and communication between indoor and outdoor spaces. The boundaries between indoor and outdoor are removed, and space and horticulture are closely combined, fostering interaction and coexistence between people and nature.

The design faced several challenges, including integrating the needs and details of three families for the space and creating an equal ratio of space and texture. The connection between space and space and the smooth design logic was the most challenging part. However, the design successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in a residential house that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

Living Naturally was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. The Silver A' Design Award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
